Tom Waits - Road to Peace from Orphans: Brawlers
In light of the recent events in Norway by a piece of shit, worthless cocksucker that bombed buildings in Oslo and killed approximately 80 adults and children on the island of Utoya, I thought of this song. The man, who’s name isn’t worth uttering in order to avoid any sense of self-satisfaction he could derive from it, was motivated by extreme-right ideals and targeted government buildings in Oslo, the capital of Norway who’s government is currently held by the Labour party, and an island where the children of people in this party were on vacation.
When it comes to violence, the means never justify the end and Waits explains this so eloquently and emotionally on this cut from his compilation of forgotten tracks from his latest foray into experimental/very percussive music that he mastered on his 2004 effort Real Gone. This was the first track I heard from the compilation and immediately committed myself to dropping $60 on the three disc and beautifully packaged monster once it came out. I hate associating this great man whose changed my experience of music forever back in high school with this act by a selfish and worthless fucker, but in a way, it makes Waits music all the more poignant and relevant.
